We said what?? Ep. 2.0 Recap (Kate)

Updated: Aug 29

As part of what we thought we might do to replace the toolbox, I thought it might be fun to go through each episode and consider, "Did I really say that?"

We start the episode with me having the theme song to Welcome Back Kotter in my head and Maura says that we can use 15 seconds without being arrested by the copyright police. Okay she didn't use those exact words, but hyperbole is fun. I wanted to make sure this was true. I just used the trusty google machine and was unable to verify that fact in just a few minutes. In Canada we don't have fair use, but we do have fair dealings. I think that what I'm taking away from this is, don't use other people's things without asking.

We then move on to what we did this summer and we talk about Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids. Both Maura and I love this event, and the podcast. It's so much fun and I recommend checking it out. You can also check them out on Facebook and YouTube if you so desire.

Speaking about things that we did this summer, we mention that this was the first time that Maura and I have seen a Fringe show together in about a decade. That was almost correct as it has been 9 years. #dedicatedtotruth Not only did we see one show together, but we saw a few. If you like theatre, the Edmonton Fringe festival really is one of the best in the world. Well best is subjective. But it is the oldest and the largest in North America, and well worth a visit. I mean where else can you see Dancing and Singing Vaginas, if not at a Fringe festival?

I also do want to provide some info on the books we've mentioned as I'm not always the best at saying authors names whilst recording an episode. Here are the books that are mentioned in this episode (not including Jane Austin)

If you check any of these out, please let us know what you like and don't like. If you have any books that you think that we should read, we'd love to hear them as well.

The next thing that we talk about is an opinion piece written for CBC by Dr. Michelle Cohen. I don't want to get into it too much as Maura has written a wonderful post about it which you can read here. I did mention that I have an issue with Dr. Oz and I brought him up as he has had issues in the past with a senate committee and the diet products that are shown on his show. You can read about that here if you would like to know more.

The last major point that we touched on was the story of Ellen Bennett, who made the news earlier this summer because her doctors ignored health issues she had, and brushed it off as weight problems. I have said that if you aren't happy with your doctor or you feel that your doctor is ignoring your symptoms, please find another opinion. I did mention that if we have a doctor that we feel isn't treating us fairly that there should be a place to complain and let the proper authorities know. A quick google search has provided me with the link for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. You can make a complaint there. I know that finding clinics that are taking new patients can be difficult, but they are out there. The college will also help you find a doctor that is taking new patients, and also be sure to ask around. Sometimes even doctors who don't take new patients will take in family members. We won't know until we ask.

This is just a brief glimpse into what we discussed on this episode. You can listen to this episode, and all of our episodes on the podcast page of this website, or on most podcast apps. Most of all though, we wish to hear from you. Please feel free to contact us if there is something you would like to hear us discuss, or even better to discuss it with us.

We are excited to have Dawn Z. come back and chat with us for our next episode which will be out on September 17th, 2018.
